Kamal Mahawar has been working as a Consultant General and Bariatric Surgeon at Sunderland Royal Hospital since April 2011 and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Sunderland. He takes a significant academic interest in bariatric surgery and has led many international collaborations. He is passionate about a multidisciplinary approach to obesity and regularly collaborates with other specialists and patient representatives working in this area.

He has co-authored over 175 peer-reviewed articles and multiple book chapters in prestigious titles. Kamal has delivered invited talks at many national and international conferences including in the USA, Germany, France, Belgium, Mexico, UAE, India, and Turkey. He has also been an invited speaker at WLS info and ASO meetings.

He is one of the highest volume bariatric surgeons in the United Kingdom with his volumes consistently above the 90th percentile according to the data published by the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR). He leads the Tier 3 services at Sunderland Royal Hospital and believes in a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to obesity. His book “Fight with Fat” targeted at the lay public, published in 2018, was widely appreciated in popular media.

He is a co-editor of “Journal of Bariatric Surgery”(Wolkers Kluwer) and an Associate Editor of “Obesity Surgery”, “Annals of Royal College of Surgeons England”, and “Clinical Obesity” and is on the editorial board of Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases (SOARD) and other journals. He is recognised globally for his contribution to Bariatric Surgery. The journal “Obesity Surgery” published his biography in 2018.

He is a member of the council of the Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland and is its Associate Director for conferences. He sits on the Council of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS) and chairs its Patient Safety Committee. He is the Northern England representative on the council of the British Benign Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Society. He also sits on the NBSR Committee of the BOMSS, Research and Communications Committees of the ASGBI, National Hiatal Surgery Registry Committee of the BBUGGS, and scientific committee of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO). Kamal has set up many social media communities to enhance communication amongst professionals. This includes multiple groups with thousands of surgeons, groups for bariatric dieticians, and groups for bariatric nurses.

Kamal lives in Newcastle Upon Tyne with his wife Shalini, a software engineer, and son Kush.
