World Obesity and RTI publish new pilot study on the economic impact of obesity

World Obesity Federation (WOF) and Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International have joined forces to improve the quality, comparability and communicability of the economic evidence on the impact of overweight and obesity. The complete report is available on the World Obesity Federation website and there is also a link to a paper published in BMJ Global Health. The study finds that the economic impact of obesity is between 0.8 - 2.4% of annual GDP in eight countries. The study also calculates the cost of continued political inaction, with economic impacts projected to rise to 4.8% by 2060 if urgent action is not taken by public health leaders around the world.

Membership of the World Obesity Federation and the European Association for the Study of Obesity is included as part of membership of the UK Association for the Study of Obesity – currently just £60 a year for full membership and £30 for student membership.
