ASO contributes to Parliamentary discussions on obesity prevention and treatment

Nov 14, 2025

Obesity prevention and treatment were highlighted in Parliament during the Royal College of Pathologists’ Pathology Solutions event, held in the House of Commons as part of National Pathology Week.

ASO’s Dr Kevin Deans was invited to speak on the growing national shift towards prevention. In his remarks, he outlined how effective treatment and early intervention can significantly reduce the risk of developing related conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and cardiometabolic disease. He emphasised the need for accessible services, timely support for those at risk, and a more joined-up public health approach that addresses the wider social and environmental factors influencing people’s health.

Alongside his speaking contribution, Kevin represented ASO at the event’s stand focused on preventing obesity-related diseases. He shared insights on the importance of early intervention and the value of individualised support for people living with obesity, highlighting how improved pathways can help reduce long-term health inequalities and relieve pressure on the health system.

The event brought together clinicians, scientists, parliamentarians and policy specialists to explore opportunities to strengthen prevention across the health system. ASO welcomed the focus on obesity as a key public health priority and the opportunity to contribute to national-level discussions.

ASO remains committed to advancing evidence-based approaches to obesity prevention and treatment and ensuring that the voices of clinicians and researchers are reflected in policymaking.
