Today, the UK Government released its Fit for the Future: 10-Year Health Plan for England. The plan sets out a range of measures aimed at tackling health challenges, including obesity.
The Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO) welcomes the renewed ambition and the inclusion of structural policies such as:
-
Updating the Nutrient Profiling Model
-
Introducing transparent reporting and mandatory health targets for large food companies
-
Strengthening school food standards
-
Increasing support for families through the Healthy Start scheme
If these measures are implemented with ambition and protected from commercial pressure, they could contribute significantly to a healthier, fairer future.
However, ASO emphasises that obesity is a complex, chronic condition shaped by systems, not individual choices. While incentive apps and awareness campaigns may play a role, lasting progress requires sustained investment, clear accountability, and a long-term commitment to changing the environments that drive poor health.
ASO President Professor Nicola Heslehurst commented:
“We welcome the Government’s renewed commitment to prevention but urge Ministers to prioritise long-term structural change, not short-term optics. We stand ready to support delivery through the collective expertise of our research, clinical, and professional community.”
