Janine Makaronidis is a Consultant in Diabetes and Metabolism at Barts Health NHS Trust (Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals) with a special interest in obesity and metabolic disease. She leads the regional specialist weight management service and is the bariatric physician to the Homerton University Hospital. She is a Senior Honorary Lecturer at Queen Mary University London and a senior researcher at University College London. She leads the clinical obesity sub-theme of the UCL/UCLH BRC Obesity Theme.
Her research interests include developing precision-medicine approaches utilising and combining obesity pharmacotherapies with metabolic/bariatric surgery, dietary and exercise interventions for optimal health outcomes. She is currently the chief investigator for the BARI-STEP trial, a pharmacotherapy RCT in people with a suboptimal weight loss response following metabolic/bariatric surgery. She also undertakes investigator- and industry-led trials investigating novel interventions for obesity, metabolic pathology and Type 2 Diabetes.
She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a member of the clinical subcommittee of the Association for the Study of Obesity (lead for Sponsorship) and a member of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and Diabetes UK.
