Dr Zainab Akhter is a Research Associate at Newcastle University. Her research interests include: the preconception, pregnancy and postnatal periods, nutrition, obesity, and bariatric surgery. She is currently working on a NIHR SPHR study which explores food insecurity during pregnancy. Her thesis explored pregnancy in women with a history of bariatric surgery, related maternal and infant outcomes, and specialist support provision by healthcare professionals. Other current projects include: breastfeeding after bariatric surgery, breastfeeding and food insecurity, and gestational weight gain after bariatric surgery. She enjoys science communication and creating user-friendly research resources.
