ASO Welcomes Updated NICE Guideline on Maternal and Child Nutrition

Jan 16, 2025

The Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO) welcomes the newly published NICE guideline: Maternal and Child Nutrition (NG247). This guidance provides a full update to Maternal and Child Nutrition (PH11) and a partial update to Weight Management Before, During and After Pregnancy (PH27).

What the guideline covers

  • Nutrition and weight management during pregnancy, for those planning or currently pregnant

  • Nutrition for children up to 5 years

ASO statement

Professor Nicola Heslehurst, ASO President and Professor of Maternal and Child Nutrition, said:

“The new guidance and research recommendations include several factors relevant for obesity prevention and care, which will go some way to improving the health and well‑being of pregnant people and their children. The recognition of the importance of poverty and food insecurity is highly relevant for obesity. The explicit inclusion of recommendations focussing on these societal factors during this life course is encouraging, demonstrating positive steps towards a move away from obesity stigma and a focus on individual responsibility.”

Background

  • NG247 was published by NICE on 15 January 2025

  • It replaces PH11 (Maternal and Child Nutrition, originally published in 2008 and last updated in 2011) and partially updates PH27 (Weight Management Before, During and After Pregnancy, published in 2010).

  • The guideline includes new recommendations marked “[2025],” while retaining certain recommendations from PH11, such as child weighing practices, with minimal edits.
