ASO Proud to Support NICE Quality Standard on Overweight and Obesity Management

Aug 6, 2025

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has published the updated Quality Standard (QS212) on Overweight and Obesity Management. ASO is proud to have contributed to its development and is now an official supporting organisation.

The standard sets out high-quality, evidence-based, and non-stigmatising care for children (aged 2 and over) and adults living with overweight, obesity, or central adiposity. It covers prevention, behavioural management, assessment, and treatment, including for those with established co-morbidities and those at risk of other medical conditions.

By defining clear priority areas for improvement, the Quality Standard offers a vital framework for:

  • Health and care commissioners

  • Service designers and providers

  • Public health teams

  • Policymakers

ASO encourages all professionals and organisations in these areas to use and share the standard to help embed consistent, equitable, and effective obesity care across systems.

“We welcome NICE’s emphasis on evidence-based, non-stigmatising care and its recognition of the need for system-wide action,” said ASO President, Prof Nicola Heslehurst. “This standard offers a vital tool for improving prevention and treatment, reducing inequalities, and ensuring that people living with obesity receive the respect and support they deserve.”
